    I have to commend you on most of your advice-except for your rule #4. With 50 years of experience as a professional bass player, I must stress the importance of timing and precision. An exceptional way to develop timing is with a simple metronome, practiced at various tempos, ensuring you always land on the (1) ONE. In a recording situation, if a bassist doesn't land solidly on the ONE, the drummer might start throwing drumsticks your way! Continuously missing the downbeat can even get you fired from the session. Practice your bass patterns at a very slow tempo; it's the hardest but most beneficial. A solid bassist must mix up quarter, half, and sixteenth notes in any pattern they invent, but they must always land on a solid downbeat. Thank you for allowing me to share my two cents on your very useful lesson.

    • @BecomeABassist
      @BecomeABassist 5 дней назад

      Perhaps I wasn't as clear as I could have been with that point @johnnyangel504. I wasn't suggesting that bassists shouldn't play with good timing or precision - I specifically say the opposite. I also say that playing with a metronome on all 4 beats is totally fine at the start. The point was that you don't want to become _reliant_ on the metronome (or drummer or anyone else in the band) as you get more experience. As a bassist, developing a solid sense of *internal* time is practically essential. That way, if there's some kind of breakdown in a song where it's just the bass - or if a song requires a bass intro that means playing alone - then you're not relying on anyone or anything else to give you to the time or feel. This is exactly the purpose of the famous Victor Wooten exercise where he plays with a drum machine for a while, then it drops out and comes back in. It's up to Victor (or whoever plays the exercise) to keep the time when the drums aren't playing. I hope this clarifies things a little.

    And what about learning walking bass lines? 😅

    • @BecomeABassist
      @BecomeABassist 12 дней назад

    • @gingerbread-woman
      @gingerbread-woman 12 дней назад

      @@BecomeABassist In a walking bass line there can be a lot of variation and it can become somewhat arbitrary, even if there are sections and the chords are repeated. This makes it difficult to learn.

    • @BecomeABassist
      @BecomeABassist 12 дней назад

      @gingerbread-woman - Are you talking about learning specific walking bass lines? As in - transcribing the notes 1-by-1 as they appear on a recording? If so, that's not what this video is about; it's about learning the _songs_ and the structure behind them, which you can absolutely do if you're wanting to play songs that use walking bass. If you're talking about transcribing specific walking lines, then that's a different story, and in that case, I'd recommend these videos as a starting point: This video goes over the transcription process: ruclips.net/video/OGXmbfW-nOA/видео.html And this one will show you how to apply that to bass lines: ruclips.net/video/z6zvflY7Z70/видео.html And if you want to create your own walking lines instead of transcribing them from recordings, this is a good place to start: ruclips.net/video/ImswmkN-y_c/видео.html

    I've been playing bass for several years and I actually learned the number system first because I play by ear. If a fellow musicians start calling out C over F to the A minor and back to the B flat...blah blah blah, I will look at him with utter confusion because my mind just doesn't work like that. I guess pointing out every single letter on the fretboard in .5 second is a weakness that I'm continuously having to work on. But for now, the number system will do.

    Such a great video. A lot of what is discussed in this video is what made the original GNR lineup the greatest band in the world. Everyone understood their part and played within the music. Guys like Duff and Steven will never make the “top whatever” lists because they didn’t compromise the integrity of the GNR sound or a particular song to showcase their personal skills and talent. Conversely you have guys like Travis Barker who may as well be in a different room playing a different song than the rest of Blink182. Number one rule in making music is harmony.

    What are "root", "fifth" and "one"? What are these?

    • @BecomeABassist
      @BecomeABassist 18 дней назад

      They're referring to notes within the chords that we're playing over. They're based on the scales that go with each chord. For example, if you're playing over a C major chord, it's often associated with the C major scale. If you number the notes of the C major scale, you get this: C - 1 (also called the 'root') D - 2 E - 3 F - 4 G - 5 A - 6 B - 7 So the 'root' of the C major is the C, and the 5th is the G. I do have some other lessons that go a bit more in-depth. One good one to check out would be this one: ruclips.net/video/FHBpSe-i5gQ/видео.html
